Who We Are

For the past 21 years, Camp Twin Lakes has provided life-changing camp experiences to thousands of Georgia's children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges. Camp Twin Lakes provides week-long summer camps and year-round weekend retreats at three fully-accessible and medically-supportive campsites, daycamps, and through hospital-based Camp-To-Go programs. Camp Twin Lakes collaborates with nearly 60 different nonprofit organizations, each serving a different population, to create customized programs that teach campers to overcome obstacles and grow in their confidence and capabilities. Annually, Camp Twin Lakes serves more than 9,900 campers, leverages support from 3,500 volunteers, and subsidizes 80% of the direct camp costs ($800) for every camper served.

Prior to Camp Twin Lakes' opening in 1993, special needs groups in Georgia lacked adequate facilities to hold their camp programs. Today, Camp Twin Lakes partners with these organizations to provide high quality, fully-accessible recreational activities in a medically supportive environment. Camp programs are customized for each group of campers.

Since its opening, Camp Twin Lakes has welcomed more than 100,000 children and volunteers. Each year, thousands of campers and volunteers head to CTL-Rutledge, CTL- Will-A-Way, and CTL-Camp Dream for week-long summer sessions and year-round weekend retreats.

As our Director of Camping Services Dan Mathews puts it, “CTL campers constantly comment on how powerful it is to feel normal, to be one of the group, and not to stand out because of their various illnesses or challenges. Kids build camaraderie and friendships that will last a lifetime, not to mention support systems that will see them through their hard times back at home, which often entail doctor’s appointments, hospital visits and ongoing treatments.”

A medical coordinator is on permanent staff and all camp programming is overseen by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. CTL Program Staff are specially trained in adaptable and accessible programming. We collaborate with each Camp Partner to ensure every child's needs, medical or otherwise, are attended to.

A national model for camps serving special populations, Camp Twin Lakes is accredited by the American Camp Association.

Mission Statement
We provide year-round camp experiences for children with serious illnesses, disabilities and life challenges to help each camper grow in their confidence and experience the joys of childhood.

Vision Statement
Camp Twin Lakes will be a vital network of closely aligned partners who collaborate to provide year-round, transformative camp experiences that deeply impact our campers and their families.

Value Statements
365 days a year, I cant walk but at Camp Twin Lakes, I can fly,” said a young camper as she was gently lowered back into her wheelchair after flying down the zip line in a fully supportive body harness.  This camper is just one of thousands of children and teens facing serious illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges served annually through Camp Twin Lakes’ (CTL) year-round camp programs.

We are guided by the principle, “Every Child Deserves All We Have.” Along with the values below, this principle serves as CTL’s compass to guide our mission each and every day.

  1. ‚ÄčCampers always come first "You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." - A.A. Milne
Campers are at the core of everything we do. Camp Twin Lakes’ programs are intentional with a focus on helping each camper increase skills, confidence, and capabilities through engaging activities and experiences. We foster environments that allow our campers to exercise creative freedom, have fun, and make discoveries through new adventures. Simply stated by a camper, “Camp gives me strength to face the world another year.”

  2. Safety, trust and accountability go hand in hand with the fun of camp "The price of greatness is responsibility." - Winston Churchill
Camp should always be fun, but most importantly, it must be safe. Parents entrust us with their most valued and precious assets—their children. We commit to providing highly trained staff, leveraging top-quality medical support and following strict operational protocols to maintain a layer of protection for campers, volunteers and staff. In addition, our donors trust us to be good stewards of their support and, in turn, we commit to financial transparency through annual audits and reporting standards.

  3. Celebrate the small stuff...(and the big stuff too) "Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realizing that life is made up of little things." - Frank A. Clark
Camp Twin Lakes embraces opportunities for campers to learn and grow. Our campers are encouraged to try new things—it may be as simple as tasting a new vegetable from our farm or as challenging as learning to swim for the very first time! We know the camp experience is nothing short of transformational for campers to gain independence, have fun, learn to self-manage their challenge, and overcome misconceptions about what they think they are capable of accomplishing. At Camp Twin Lakes, challenges often become triumphs.

  4. Celebrate differences "Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi
We welcome everyone with an open heart and treat people with respect and consideration. We embrace the ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of our campers, staff, volunteers and donors. When we model our value of embracing differences, our campers learn from our example.

  5. Harness the power of collaboration "The whole is more than the sum of its parts." - Aristotle
We rely on the generous support of our donors, the thousands of hours from our dedicated volunteers, the collaboration with our nonprofit Camp Partners, and the trust of every parent who sends their child to a Camp Twin Lakes program. Camp Twin Lakes is a true testimony that collectively, we can harness the power of community

  6. Leadership is in our DNA "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." - John Quincy Adams
Camp Twin Lakes strives for excellence in every facet of our organization and we are committed to deepening our impact with each camper and building on our expertise as a leader within our field. As we venture into new programs, we move with confidence knowing that we have been diligent in maximizing resources and best practices before taking the next bold step.

  7. Make your mark "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
Camp Twin Lakes is committed to being good stewards of the world around us and our sustainable approach reflects this value. We inspire our campers to become self-confident leaders by advocating for themselves, helping others and contributing to their communities.
